Life is fragile. We wake up assuming we have time-time to work, time to plan, time to love.
But in a single moment, everything can change.
That afternoon, I was working on the third floor of the house, about 10 kilometers from where a building in Bangkok would later collapse. At first, I thought I was just lightheaded. I hadn’t eaten lunch, and for a brief second, I assumed I was simply feeling weak. But then, I noticed the lamp swaying. The floor beneath me trembled. The walls groaned.
It wasn’t just me. The ground was shaking.
I turned around and saw my dog, his body trembling, vomiting badly on the floor. He must have sensed it before I did—the deep, unsettling shift in the earth. Without thinking, I scooped him up and carried him down to the second floor, my heart pounding with every step.

The swimming pool outside, usually still and calm, had turned restless. Waves rippled across the water, sloshing back and forth in a way I had never seen before-like the earth itself was struggling to find its balance.
Nothing else mattered in that moment—no emails, no deadlines, no plans for tomorrow. All I could think about was my daughter. I had to get to her.
I frantically tried calling a taxi, but none came, retrying again and again, every second stretching endlessly. When the car finally arrived, I barely heard the driver’s words—I was already bracing myself as we sped toward her school.

When I arrived, I saw the children, my daughter among them, sitting in the yard under the careful watch of their teachers. They were safe. She was safe. I exhaled a breath I hadn’t realized I was holding.
But my thoughts weren’t just on her. My heart was with the people near the collapsed building, with friends and strangers alike, all caught in the same terrifying reality. Was everyone okay? Were they trapped? At that moment, all I could do was pray—for them, for us, for everyone whose lives had just been shaken in more ways than one.

The earth moved that day, and so did something inside me. It was a reminder of how unpredictable life is.
We make plans, set schedules, chase goals—but in the end,
what truly matters is the people we hold close.
So today, hold them tighter. Tell them you love them. And send a prayer for those still waiting to be found.
